The koala is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. Koalas live in eastern Australia where eucalyptus trees are most plentiful. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, but their preferred eucalyptus species vary from region to region.
Koalas are found in a range of habitats ranging from coastal to low woodlands inland. Although the species covers a large area, only portions of koala habitat remain. Current threats to this species include continued habitat destruction, fragmentation, and modification (which makes them vulnerable to predation by dogs, vehicle strikes, and other factors), bushfires, and disease, as well as drought associated mortality in habitat fragments.
The IUCN lists the species as „Least Concern”. As of 2012 there have been increasing concerns about the animal’s sustainable future in the environment. In Australia in 2012 the koala populations in Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory have been placed on the national list of vulnerable species.
