The discovery of two moons of Mars

11 August 1877:

The two moons of Mars were discovered by American astronomer Asaph Hall. He named them Phobos (fear) and Deimos (panic), after the horses that pulled the chariot of the Greek war god Ares, the counterpart to the Roman war god Mars.
