Madonna’s album Like A Virgin

At 10th August of 1985,  Madonna’s „Like A Virgin” became the first album by a female to be certified for 5 million sales.

‘Like a Virgin’ is an album known to many as the birth of pop as we know it. An album copied more times than the Declaration of Independence, a pop album that has received more praise than any one could have ever predicted. An album that sold millions of copies, even with its sexed up image and title. It was the album that made Madonna a house-hold name and an album that greatly inspired acts as diverse as Sonic Youth and Britney Spears.

Madonna had already made serious waves with her 1983 self-titled debut, springing her irresistibly exuberant, sexy dance-pop onto an unsuspecting public. But it was 1984’s ‘Like A Virgin’ that exhibited the calculated pop mastery that would define the singer’s career. Everything from the cover art (which features Madonna splayed out provocatively in a wedding dress) to the sleek production from Chic’s Nile Rodgers announced Madonna’s arrival as the queen of pop.

It’s a trove of rightful hit singles. „Like a Virgin,” „Material Girl,” and „Into the Groove” still stand up today as classic pop hits, while the forgotten gems „Angel” and „Dress You Up” still deliver delights. Even supposedly weaker songs like „Over and Over” still have their charms.

To promote the album, Madonna embarked on ‘The Virgin Tour’, which had shows in cities of North America only. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album diamond for shipment of ten million copies across the United States. Worldwide it has sold 25 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time.

‘Like a Virgin’ is one of those albums that, no matter what anyone says, still sounds incredibly dated. It is one of those albums that defied odds and outlived the styles and technology used to make it famous so much that it is now considered vintage.

A woman in control of her sex life and career was such a new idea that Madonna became the biggest thing to hit pop, and popular culture, in years. And she’s stayed that way: her influence on the way women came to view sex, love and themselves was so great that some universities offered courses in Madonna studies. And she’s also continued to make some of pop’s most enduring singles.
