Agostino Carracci’s birthday
Originally shared by Getty Museum
Today is the birthday of Italian artist Agostino Carracci. He was born in Bologna on this day in 1557. The Carracci drew constantly. When Agostino, his brother Annibale, and their cousin Lodovico sat down to meals, they held bread in one hand and charcoal in the other. In 1582, the Carracci founded the Accademia degli Incamminati (Academy of the Progressives), which began as an informal gathering of artists. By 1585, it was the most popular teaching academy in Bologna and a rallying point for progressive artistic tendencies.
Carracci based this drawing on a painting by Veronese that he saw on a trip to Venice and Padua in 1582. During this sojourn, Carracci carefully studied the works of the Venetian masters Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese and made numerous engravings after their paintings.
