Born on this date in 1850, German composer Luise Adolpha Le Beau. From an early age, her father provided some instruction in piano and composition, and, at the age of 15, Le Beau made a career in music her life’s aspiration. In 1868 she debuted her talents as a pianist by playing concertos by both Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and went on, a few years later, to study with Clara Schumann. She made a number of concert tours in Germany, was acquainted with the great musicians and composers of the day, established a music course for young women, and composed several dozen works, the majority of these for piano.
