Walter Lantz (27 April 1899 – 22 March 1994, USA) was one of the major players in the early years of animation, and the creator of such legendary characters as ‘Andy Panda’ and ‘Woody Woodpecker’. He was born in New Rochelle, New York, into a family of Italian immigrants. He made cartoons for a local newspaper before turning to animation at Bray Studios. Under the guidance of Gregory La Cava and Isadore Klein, he worked on animated productions starring early newspaper comic characters like ‘The Katzenjammer Kids’, ‘Mutt and Jeff’ and ‘Krazy Kat’. Lantz moved from the East to the West and settled in Hollywood, where he started out working for Charles B. Mintz at Universal Pictures on productions with the Walt Disney creation ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’.
