The Thing from Another World premiered on this date in 1951.

By the end of 1951, box office returns amounted to nearly $2 million, surpassing those of the other two major SF features of the year, The Day The Earth Stood Still and When Worlds Collide.

The Thing from Another World was named „the greatest 1950s sci-fi movie” by Time magazine.

It is # 87 on the American Film Institute list AFI’s 100 Years…100 Thrills.

Deemed „culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress, it was selected, in 2001, for preservation in the National Film Registry.

In 1982, John Carpenter released an updated version entitled The Thing, somewhat more faithful to the original source material for both films, John W. Campbell’s 1938 novella “Who Goes There?”
