On this day in 1937 the BBC broadcasted the coronation of King George VI at Westminster Abbey throughout the Empire in its first outside broadcast and the world’s first global radio broadcast. High resolution photos were sent by William Stephenson’s wirephoto system which were published widely in Canadian newspapers.
Two years later, with Queen Elizabeth he travelled first to Quebec beginning a month-long royal visit to Canada. It was the first by a reigning British monarch. He latterly addressed citizens of Québec in fluent French.
