Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle ( was born #onthisday in 1657 ). He was a French science writer who presented science for the lay reader. He popularized the astronomical theories of Descartes. Though he was a man of the 17th and 18th — he may even fit 20th and 21st C in his unflagging intellectual curiosity and in his belief in the limitless progress of knowledge in a world in which everything must be open to rational explanation. Fontenelle was a popular figure in the educated French society of his period, holding a position of esteem comparable only to that of Voltaire.
