On this day, 11 February in 660 BCE, according to tradition, Japan was founded by Emperor Jimmu. According to legend, he is the descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, through her grandson Ninigi, as well as a descendant of the storm god Susanoo. After capturing Yamato, Jimmu established the area as his center of power. Today, the event is still celebrated in Japan as National Foundation Day and is a national holiday.
