English novelist, poet, and essayist George Meredith was born on this date in 1828. His 1859 novel, “The Ordeal of Richard Feverel”, is “seen by some critics as the first modern novel in English literature.” Meredith was admired by Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde, and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson and J. M. Barrie.
