Jeremy Bentham’s birthday

Happy birthday to Jeremy Bentham, born on this day in 1748!
Among other enlightened ideas, Bentham espoused separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, the abolition of slavery, the right to divorce, and the decriminalization of homosexuality. That would be a solid set of principles for even a 21st Century philosopher. It’s pretty impressive for a guy from the 18th.
Bentham also believed “it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong.” I doubt he would have been a fan of the Electoral College.
