Ossip Gabrilowitsch
February 7, 1878, Saint Petersburg – September 14, 1936, Detroit
Ossip Gabrilowitsch was a Russian-born American pianist, conductor and composer.
He won the Rubinstein prize at the age of 16, was conductor of the Munich Konzertverein (1910-1914) and was put in jail following a pogrom. Gabrilowitsch settled in the US, was appointed the founding director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and married Mark Twain’s daughter, Clara Clemens, a singer who appeared with him in recital.
