Buddy Tate
February 22, 1913, Sherman, Texas – February 10, 2001, Chandler, Arizona
George Holmes Tate was an American tenor saxophonist who played with a big, rich tone and fluent melodic imagination, first with traveling swing bands in the Midwest. As a featured soloist with Count Basie (1939–1948), he incorporated some of Lester Young’s innovative melodic and harmonic concepts; he then led a popular band at the Celebrity Club in New York City (1953–1974), toured internationally with all-star swing revival groups, and occasionally played lyric clarinet.
