Joseph Willem Mengelberg was a Dutch conductor, famous for his performances of Mahler and Strauss with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
His father was the well-known Dutch-German sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg.

When he was 20, he was chosen as General Music Director of the city of Lucerne Switzerland, where he conducted an orchestra and a choir, directed a music school, taught piano lessons and continued to compose.

Four years later, in 1895, Mengelberg was appointed principal conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, a position he held until 1945.

Joseph Willem Mengelberg a fost un dirijor olandez, celebru pentru performanțele sale din Mahler și Strauss cu Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Tatăl său era cunoscutul sculptor olandez-german Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg.
La 20 de ani, a fost numit director general muzical al orașului Lucerna Elveția, unde a dirijat o orchestră și un cor, a condus o școală de muzică, a predat lecții de pian și a continuat să compună. Patru ani mai târziu, în 1895, Mengelberg a fost numit dirijor principal al Concertgebouw Orchestra, funcție pe care a ocupat-o până în 1945.
