Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies, founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer: a 68-year-old California woman named Charlotte Haley, whose sister, daughter, and granddaughter had breast cancer, had distributed peach-color ribbons to call attention to what she perceived as inadequate funding for research. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.

During October, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease,  with a series of videos, tweets, and infographics focusing on the global burden of breast cancer. In 2018, there were an estimated 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer and 627 000 deaths from breast cancer worldwide.

Nearly half of all women 40 and older have dense breasts. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are giving this helpful guide about dense breasts to every woman who requests it.

Ziua națională de luptă împotriva cancerului de sân

1 Octombrie

În fiecare an, la 1 octombrie, este marcată Ziua luptei împotriva cancerului de sân, cu scopul de a creşte gradul de conştientizare cu privire la cancerul de sân şi de a sublinia importanţa campaniilor de informare, a prevenţiei şi programelor de screening.

La fiecare trei minute, o femeie este diagnosticată cu cancer la sân și la fiecare 14 minute o femeie moare din cauza cancerului la sân, ceea ce înseamnă că una din opt femei este răpusă de cancerul la sân. Ca fapt îmbucurător, cancerul la sân depistat în stadiul incipient poate fi vindecat în proporție de peste 90%.

În România, această zi a fost marcată pentru prima dată în anul 2014, după ce, la 30 septembrie același an, Senatul și-a asumat o Declarație, prin care ziua de 1 octombrie era recunoscută ca Zi națională de luptă împotriva cancerului de sân, cancerul reprezentând „o problemă majoră de sănătate publică pe plan mondial”.

În fiecare an, la 1 octombrie se aprind lumini roz care îmbracă cele mai reprezentative clădiri sau monumente din toată lumea.

În anul 2019, Fundaţia Renaşterea va ilumina în roz Palatul Ministerului Agriculturii.
