Edwin Fischer was a Swiss classical pianist and conductor. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest traditional Germanic repertoire interpreters of the twentieth century. He is also regarded as one of the finest piano pedagogues of modern times.

After study at the Basel Conservatory he taught at the Stern Conservatory, Berlin, 1905-1914.

His interpretations of the German repertory were Romantic in spirit. With his chamber orchestra (founded in 1932) he revived the practice of conducting from the keyboard; he was also noted for his cadenzas for Mozart’s concertos. He was an influential teacher in Lucerne and elsewhere.
