Prima apariție a lui Popeye Marinarul ca bandă desenată

Popeye Marinarul este un personaj celebru de benzi desenate, dar și de desen animat, care a debutat în revista de benzi desenate Timble Theatre, ca personaj secundar. Personajul a fost creat de E.C. Segar.

Popeye este înfățișat ca fiind un marinar musculos, care fumează dintr-o pipă grosolană. Mitul spanacului care îi dă puteri supraomenești s-a născut dintr-o simplă greșeală de tipar, conform căreia această legumă conține de 10 ori mai mult fier ca în mod obișnuit. Ulterior, Popeye Marinarul și-a făcut prima apariție pe marele ecran, alături de iubita lui, Olive Oyl și rivalul său Bluto într-un desen animat Betty Boop din 1933, intitulat chiar Popeye Marinarul, realizat de Frații Dave și Max Fleischer, cei care vor continua seria de desene animate până în 1942, când va începe perioada Famous Studios (1942–1957). Este și episodul primei apariții a cântecului I’m Popeye the Sailor man, compus special pentru acest desen animat.

The first appearance of Popeye the Sailor Man

Popeye the Sailor Man is a cartoon fictional character created by Elzie Crisler Segar. The character first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip, Thimble Theatre, and Popeye became the strip’s title in later years.

Segar’s Thimble Theatre strip was in its 10th year when Popeye made his debut, but the one-eyed sailor quickly became the main focus of the strip, and Thimble Theatre became one of King Features’ most popular properties during the 1930s. After Segar’s death in 1938, Thimble Theatre was continued by several writers and artists, most notably Segar’s assistant Bud Sagendorf. The strip continues to appear in first-run installments in its Sunday edition, written and drawn by Hy Eisman. The daily strips are reprints of old Sagendorf stories.

Popeye has also appeared in theatrical and television animated cartoons.
