World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The first World Environment Day was in 1973 and is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of 5 June. World Environment Day is similar to Earth Day.

It has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes.
