Francis Ford Coppola is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. Widely acclaimed as one of Hollywood’s most innovative and influential film directors, Coppola epitomized a group of filmmakers known as the New Hollywood (the group included Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, Robert Altman, Woody Allen, William Friedkin, Philip Kaufman and George Lucas). He won seven Academy Awards for Patton (1970), The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) and two Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Coppola is among only six people in Academy Award history to receive Oscars as a Producer, Director and Screenwriter, and one of only eight filmmakers to win two Palme d’Or awards.
