Antal Doráti

Antal Doráti a fost dirijor american de origine maghiară, remarcabil pentru promovarea muzicii secolului al XX-lea, în special cea a lui Béla Bartók.

A intrat la 14 ani la Academia Liszt din Budapesta, unde a studiat cu Bartók, Zoltán Kodály și Leo Weiner. A studiat și filosofia la Universitatea din Viena și la absolvire a devenit instructor privat la Opera Regală din Budapesta, unde a debutat ca dirijor în 1924. În 1928 a devenit dirijor-asistent al Operei din Dresda și în 1929, director muzical la Opera Münster. Între 1933–1941 a dirijat orchestra Ballets Russes din Monte Carlo, cu care a făcut numeroase turnee.

După debutul american din 1937 cu National Symphony din Washington, Dorati a dezvoltat o abilitate marcantă de a construi și reorganiza orchestre.

A fost director musical al nou formatului American Ballet Theater (1941-1945), a dirijat: Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1945–1949), Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1949–1960), BBC Symphony Orchestra (1963–1966), Stockholm Philharmonic (1966–1970), Washington National Symphony (1970–1977), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1975–1978), și Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1977–1981).

A devenit cetățean american în 1947. Numeroasele înregistrări ale lui Dorati includ simfoniile complete ale lui Joseph Haydn (cu Philharmonia Hungarica). De-a lungul carierei sale a lărgit repertoriul orchestrelor, promovând muzica moderne și chiar comandând noi lucrări.

Autobiografia sa, Notes of Seven Decades a fost publicată în 1979.

Antal Doráti was a Hungarian-born American conductor notable for his promotion of 20th-century music, particularly that of Béla Bartók.

The son of musicians, he entered at age 14 the Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he studied with Bartók, read philosophy at Vienna University and upon graduation became a private coach at the Budapest Royal Opera. His conducting debut took place there in 1924. In 1928 he became assistant conductor of the Dresden Opera and in 1929 became musical director at Münster Opera. From 1933 to 1941 he conducted and toured extensively with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo.

After his American debut in 1937 with the National Symphony of Washington, D.C., Dorati developed a marked ability to build and reorganize orchestras. He was music director of the newly formed American Ballet Theater (1941-1945), went on to conduct the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1945–1949), the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1949–1960), the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1963–1966), the Stockholm Philharmonic (1966–1970), the Washington National Symphony (1970–1977), the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1975–1978), and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1977–1981).

He became an American citizen in 1947. Dorati’s many recordings include the complete Joseph Haydn symphonies (with the Philharmonia Hungarica ). Throughout his career he broadened his orchestra’s repertoires, promoting modern music and commissioning new works. Notes of Seven Decades, his autobiography, was published in 1979.
