Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum este un muzeu din Cleveland, Ohio, Statele Unite, dedicat industriei muzicii și istoriei unor artiști, producători sau formații foarte cunoscute sau care au avut o influență deosebită asupra industriei muzicii, în special din domeniul rock & roll.

O serie de artiști sunt introduși în panoplia muzeului, prin intermediul unei ceremonii anuale desfășurată la New York City. În cadrul primei ceremonii au fost introduși, la data de 23 ianuarie 1986, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard și Elvis Presley.

În prezent, grupurile sau artiștii se califică pentru a fi introduși după 25 de ani de la prima apariție a unei înregistrări. Nominalizații trebuie să aibă o influență și o importanță deosebită în istoria rock & roll. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts its first members

January 23, 1986

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum located on the shore of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States and celebrates the history and cultural significance of rock music and honours the contributions of those who have played an important role in the music’s creation and dissemination. It is dedicated to archiving the history of some of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, engineers and others who have, in some major way, influenced the music industry.

Established in 1983 by a group of leading figures in the music industry – including Atlantic Records cofounder Ahmet Ertegun and Jann Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine – the nonprofit Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was responsible for the creation of the museum and hall of fame, which began inducting honorees in 1986. After considering the bids of other American cities that had been pivotal to rock history (including New Orleans, Memphis, Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City), the foundation located the museum in Cleveland, where disc-jockey Alan Freed had coined the term “rock and roll” in the 1950s and which had put together a package of public and private funding to aid in the facility’s development.

The first group of inductees, on January 23, 1986, included James Brown, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers and Jimmy Yancey were inducted as Early Influences, John Hammond received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Alan Freed and Sam Phillips were inducted as Non-Performers.
