Franz Lehár

Franz Lehár a fost un compozitor austriac de origine maghiară.

Prima sa compoziție a făcut-o la vârsta de 11 ani. A urmat studiile muzicale la Conservatorul din Praga. Încurajat de Antonin Dvořák să urmeze o carieră muzicală, Lehár s-a stabilit în Austria ca șef de trupă din 1890.

În 1896 a compus opereta Kukuschka. În anul 1902 a devenit dirijorul teatrului de operetă din Viena și și-a început activitatea de creație. În căutarea unui drum propriu, Lehár a compus vestitul vals Aur și argint, pentru Principesa Pauline von Metternich, care i-a adus primul succes.

Prima operetă de mare succes a fost Văduva veselă, compusă în anul 1905, pe un libret de Viktor Léon și Leo Stein, în care Lehár a creat un nou stil de operetă vieneză, introducând melodii de vals și imitații ale dansurilor cancan pariziene, precum și un anumit element satiric. Succesul a fost așa de mare încât doi ani mai târziu se juca la Buenos Aires în cinci teatre simultan.

Au urmat peste 30 de operete dintre care: Bărbatul cu trei neveste, Contele de Luxemburg, Dragoste de țigan, Eva, În sfârșit singuri, Fraschita, Primăvară, Paganini, Țareviciul, Țara surâsului etc.

Operetele sale au devenit binecunoscute în Anglia și Statele Unite sub titlurile lor englezești. A scris o singură mare operă, Giuditta (1934), care a avut mai puțin succes.

Reformator al operetei, Lehár devine întemeietorul noului curent, înviorând acest gen care decăzuse la finele secolului XIX.

Franz Lehár was an Austro-Hungarian composer.

Franz studied violin at the Prague Conservatory, where his violin teacher was Antonín Bennewitz, but was advised by Antonin Dvořák to focus on composition. In 1902 he became conductor at the historic Vienna Theater an der Wien, where his operetta Wiener Frauen was performed in November of that year.

He is most famous for his operettas – the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) – but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems and marches. He also composed a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Pauline von Metternich (1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas. Individual songs from some of the operettas have become standards, notably „Vilja” from The Merry Widow and „You Are My Heart’s Delight” (Dein ist mein ganzes Herz) from The Land of Smiles (Das Land des Lächelns).

Lehár was also associated with the operatic tenor Richard Tauber, who sang in many of his operettas, beginning with a revival of his 1910 operetta Zigeunerliebe in 1920 and then Frasquita in 1922, in which Lehár once again found a suitable post-war style. Lehár made a brief appearance in the 1930 film adaptation The Land of Smiles starring Tauber. Between 1925 and 1934 he wrote six operettas specifically for Tauber’s voice. By 1935 he decided to form his own publishing house, Glocken-Verlag (Publishing House of the Bells), to maximize his personal control over performance rights to his works.
