Andrei Șerban

Andrei Șerban este un cunoscut regizor de teatru și de operă, cu activitate prestigioasă internațională.

A absolvit în 1968 Institutul de Artă Teatrtală și Cinematografică București, secția Regie, clasa Radu Penciulescu.

A debutat la Teatrul Tineretului din Piatra Neamț cu spectacolele Arden of Feversham, de un autor englez anonim din secolul al XVI-lea, Iulius Cezar de Shakespeare, Omul cel bun din Siciuan de B. Brecht și apoi s-a întors în București, remarcându-se cu montarea tragediei shakespeariene Iulius Cezar la Teatrul „Lucia Sturdza Bulandra”.

În 1971 a fost invitat de Ellen Stewart, directoarea companiei La MaMa, la New York, cu o bursă Ford. Ca regizor, a pus în scenă spectacole de teatru și operă în 39 de țări.

În SUA, începând cu 1970, timp de 20 de ani, a fost asociat cu Robert Brustein’s American Repertory Theatre Company, a lucrat, de asemenea, cu La MaMa Theatre, the Public Theatre, Lincoln Centre, Circle in the Square, Yale Repertory Theatre, the Guthrie Theatre, A.C.T. și cu Opera din New York City, Seattle și Los Angeles.

În Europa, a lucrat pentru Opera din Paris, Geneva, Viena, Bologna, cu Welsh National Opera, Covent Garden, Théâtre de la Ville, Helsinki Lilla Teatern, La Comédie Française.

A revenit în România după evenimentele din decembrie 1989 ca director general al Teatrului Național din București (1990–1993). Începând din 2006 a revenit în forţă, montând în ţară mai multe spectacole importante: Pescăruşul de Cehov la Teatrul „Radu Stanca” din Sibiu, Spovedanie la Tanacu după omonim al Tatianei Niculescu Bran, Purificare de Sarah Kane la Teatrul Naţional din Cluj, Unchiul Vanea de Cehov la Teatrul Maghiar din Cluj (pentru care a primit două premii UNITER, pentru cea mai bună regie şi cel mai bun spectacol), Lear de Shakespeare la Teatrul „Bulandra” (o versiune modernă, recompensată tot cu două premii UNITER), Strigăte şi şoapte, un mare spectacol inspirat de textul lui Ingmar Bergman.

În Japonia a pus în scenă spectacole pentru Shiki Company of Tokyo. A fost profesor la numeroase universități: Yale School of Drama, Harvard University, Le Conservatoire de Paris, Stockholm Dramatic School, Theatre School of Tokyo, University of California–San Diego, Pittsburgh Theatre Institute, San Francisco State University, Carnegie-Mellon, Sarah Lawrence, Paris Conservatoire d’Art Dramatique, A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theatre Trening, Director al Oscar Hammerstein Centre for the Performing Arts at Columbia University, New York, din 1992.

Andrei Șerban

Andrei Șerban is a Romanian-born American theater and opera director. A major name in twentieth-century theater, he is renowned for his innovative and iconoclastic interpretations and stagings. Since 1992, he has been Professor of Theater at the Columbia University School of the Arts.

He studied at the Theatrical and Cinematographic Art Institute in Bucharest. As a student, he directed Julius Caesar, which he now calls his „most daring production ever„. Set in the Japanese Kabuki style, with a flower bridge built over the audience, and with Caesar’s death performed in slow motion created an enormous scandal. After that, it became very hard for him to find a job in Romania…

In 1969, Șerban emigrated to the United States, with the help of Ellen Stewart, and a grant from the Ford Foundation. In 1970, he went to Paris to study at Peter Brook’s International Centre for Theatre Research. He staged Medea at La MaMa, E.T.C., the experimental theater club in New York City. Three years later, he directed Fragments of a Greek Trilogy (Medea, The Trojan Women, and Electra), also at La MaMa.

Andrei Șerban directed Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, starring Irene Worth and Meryl Streep, nominated for a Tony Award. He directed also: Sarah Kane’s Cleansed, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, Hamlet, starring Liev Schreiber in the title role, at the Public Theater in New York.

For more than two decades, Șerban has been associated with the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the A.R.T., he has directed Lysistrata, The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew, The King Stag, Sganarelle, Three Sisters, The Juniper Tree, The Miser, Twelfth Night, Sweet Table at the Richelieu, and Pericles.

As a director, Șerban has also worked at the Circle in the Square Theatre, the Yale Repertory Theater, the American Conservatory Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City, Seattle and Los Angeles Operas, at the Paris, Geneva, Vienna, and Bologna Opera Houses, the Welsh National Opera, Covent Garden, Théâtre de la Ville, the Comédie Française, Helsinki’s Lilla Teatern, and with the Shiki Theatre Company in Tokyo. From 1990 to 1993, he headed the National Theatre Bucharest.
